How to Take the Online Singing Test
The test is designed to be simple and short.

- Sing or hum one comfortable steady note during the calibration step.
- The tool uses that pitch to choose a nearby set of target notes.
- Click Play Target Note to hear the reference tone.
- Sing the same note using a steady vowel such as “ah.”
- Watch the live detected note, frequency, and cents meter.
- Continue through all five target notes.
- Review your final Singing Test Score and detailed results.

What Does the Singing Test Score Mean?
Your main result is shown as a score out of 100.
That score combines three main parts:
- pitch accuracy;
- pitch stability;
- completion and signal consistency.
The score represents your performance on the guided target-note exercise. It does not determine whether you are a talented singer.
A higher result generally means you stayed closer to the reference pitches and maintained them more consistently. A lower result may indicate larger pitch errors, unstable notes, missed targets, or recording conditions that made the microphone signal difficult to analyze.
A useful general interpretation is:
- 85–100: strong target-note matching
- 70–84: good overall control with moderate variation
- 50–69: developing pitch accuracy and consistency
- Below 50: several notes were difficult to match reliably
Use the number as practice feedback rather than as a permanent grade.
Understanding Pitch Accuracy
Pitch Accuracy measures how close your sung note is to the target pitch.
The tool compares the frequency detected from your microphone with the known frequency of the reference note. Smaller differences produce a stronger accuracy result.
For example, if the target is A4 and your sung frequency stays very close to that reference, your accuracy score for that note will be stronger.
Consistently singing above the target means you are tending sharp, while consistently singing below it means you are tending flat.

What Does the Cents Meter Show?
The live meter expresses pitch difference in cents.
One semitone equals 100 cents, so cents allow the test to show much smaller tuning differences than note names alone.
Examples:
- 0¢ — very close to the target
- -10¢ — slightly flat
- +15¢ — slightly sharp
- -40¢ — noticeably below the target
You do not need to hold exactly 0¢ every moment. Human voices naturally move, and vibrato creates controlled pitch fluctuation.
The goal is to stay reasonably centered around the target without unnecessary tension.
Understanding Pitch Stability
Pitch Stability looks at how steady your pitch remains while you hold each note.
A note can be close to the target overall but still wobble considerably. In that situation, accuracy may be acceptable while stability is lower.
Pitch stability can be influenced by:
- breath control;
- vocal tension;
- register changes;
- vibrato;
- weak onset;
- fatigue;
- unfamiliar notes.

Note Match Rate and Average Error
The Note Match Rate shows how many target notes were matched within the tool’s acceptable pitch window.
For example, a 4/5 result means four of the five notes were matched closely enough to count as successful.
Average Error shows the average pitch difference across the completed exercise in cents.
These two measurements are useful together.
A singer might have:
- a high match rate but moderate average error;
- a lower match rate because one or two notes were much harder;
- a small average error but reduced stability.

Accuracy and Limitations
Online microphone pitch detection has practical limitations.

- reference-tone bleed;

- clipping;

- very low input;

- device audio processing.
The detector also works best with one clear pitch at a time.

Privacy and Microphone Processing
Microphone access starts only after you begin the test.
The plugin analyzes your microphone signal directly in your browser. The target tones are also generated locally by the browser.
